  • Back End Engineer (Java/Groovy)

We cannot sponsor for this role or work with a third party.

    Role: Java/ Groovy Developer
    Location:
    Remote
    Duration:
    6 month Contract to hire
    Wage: Based on experience

    Summary:
Capstone IT is helping our client who was voted “Best place to work”
a SR. Java Engineer with Groovy experience who will design, build, and optimize scalable applications and APIs that support enterprise products and services. This person will work across the full development lifecycle—from ideation and design to deployment and optimization—while collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver high-performance, cloud-based solutions.

    Top 4 Skills:
    • Java (Spring Boot, Groovy)
    • RESTful API Development
    • Event-Driven Architecture (Kafka or RabbitMQ)
    • SQL / Data Management

    Responsibilities:
    • Design, develop, test, and deploy scalable backend applications and APIs
    • Build and support event-driven systems using messaging platforms like Kafka or RabbitMQ
    • Collaborate with teams to translate business needs into technical solutions
    • Participate in architecture discussions and solution design
    • Optimize application performance, scalability, and reliability
    • Write clean, maintainable, and testable code following best practices
    • Contribute to Agile processes including user stories and sprint activities
    • Document technical solutions and system designs

    Qualifications:
    • Strong backend development experience using Java, Spring Boot, and Groovy
    • Experience building and maintaining RESTful APIs
    • Hands-on experience with event-driven systems (Kafka or RabbitMQ)
    • Solid SQL skills across relational databases (DB2, SQL Server, etc.)
    • Experience with Docker; Kubernetes is a plus
    • Exposure to AWS (CloudFront) and/or Azure
    • Familiarity with Agile tools (JIRA, Confluence)
    • Strong understanding of software design principles (SOLID)
    • Nice to have: Cloud architecture experience, Kubernetes, Azure

    Role context:

Within this organization’s ESS (Enterprise Solutions & Services) division, this engineer is expected to be a core technical contributor who shapes application development strategy as much as they execute it. The role is not narrowly scoped to ticket-driven development — this person is expected to facilitate solution brainstorming, drive technology exploration, and proactively identify ways to advance the division’s product and service capabilities.

The engineer will need to navigate ambiguity — requirements may not always be fully defined, and the expectation is that this person can move forward independently, make sound architectural decisions, and escalate thoughtfully. Cross-functional collaboration is a strong theme: they’ll work alongside infrastructure teams, business stakeholders, and peer engineers, requiring both technical depth and communication fluency.

Adaptability is central to the role. The person is expected to shift between roles — individual contributor, technical lead, mentor — depending on the project phase or team need. The remote-first nature of this position amplifies the need for autonomous working style and strong written communication.

Please send your resume and salary requirements for immediate consideration!
