Location: Remote US, Light travel may be required

Duration: 6-month contract to hire
Conversion Salary: $160K – $180K plus strong benefit package

Capstone IT is seeking a strategic and hands-on Java Architect to lead enterprise architecture initiatives within a large, complex environment. This role will focus on modernizing platforms, advancing event-driven architecture, and enabling scalable, secure solutions that align with long-term business objectives.  This role is considered 70% strategic and 30% hands on.

This is a high-impact position requiring both technical depth and the ability to influence across teams, helping shape the future-state architecture while mentoring engineering talent.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and implementation of scalable, loosely coupled systems, driving the transition from monolithic to modern, distributed architectures.
  • Partner with business and technology leaders to define architecture roadmaps, support modernization efforts, and align solutions with enterprise strategy.
  • Establish and promote best practices for event-based systems, ensuring effective communication across platforms and domains.
  • Drive proof-of-concept initiatives, evaluate emerging technologies, and lead design sessions to validate business and technical solutions.
  • Define and enforce architecture standards related to security, compliance, performance, and responsible AI practices.
  • Guide and develop engineers and architects, fostering a culture of continuous learning, accountability, and engineering excellence.
  • Work closely with product, engineering, and external partners to deliver integrated, scalable, and observable solutions. 

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience leading enterprise architecture initiatives (TOGAF certification preferred)
  • Strong expertise in event-driven architecture and enterprise integration patterns
  • Proven ability to translate complex technical concepts for both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring and developing technical teams

Technical Skills

  • Experience with cloud-native architectures (AWS preferred)
  • Proficiency in Python, Java or .NET, and relational databases
  • Strong experience with microservices, APIs, and event-based systems
  • Hands-on knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, automation, and SDLC best practices
  • Experience with prototyping, experimentation, and solution validation
