Salary Range: $120,000 – -$135,000 (Based on Experience)

Capstone IT is partnering with a leading insurance and financial services organization to hire a Data Engineer – Operational Data for a contract-to-hire role based onsite in Omaha, NE. This position supports enterprise data initiatives by developing and maintaining ETL pipelines that feed the organization’s operational data stores and data warehouse environments. Working under the direction of the Senior Manager of Data Engineering, this individual will play a key role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and performance of critical data assets used to drive enterprise decision-making. The engineer will be responsible for designing and managing ETL workflows, performing data quality analysis, and implementing transformation logic using tools such as Informatica, DataStage, or DBT.

In addition to new development, this role includes supporting production environments and participating in an on-call rotation. The ideal candidate will have experience with cloud data solutions (AWS, Azure, or GCP), strong SQL and scripting skills (Python or Shell), and familiarity with dimensional modeling. Success in this role requires excellent communication skills, cross-functional collaboration, and the ability to work in a fast-paced Agile environment focused on continuous improvement and data modernization.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain ETL pipelines that ingest, transform, and load structured and semi-structured data into operational data stores and data warehouses.
  • Analyze and profile data sources; identify data quality issues and define cleansing/transformation logic.
  • Document source-to-target mappings and business rules for file transformations and data integration.
  • Collaborate with business teams, analysts, and developers to translate requirements into technical specifications.
  • Ensure alignment of ETL solutions with enterprise data architecture and standards.
  • Participate in all levels of testing: unit, integration, system, and user acceptance.
  • Provide hands-on production support, triaging ETL issues and implementing resolutions in a timely manner.
  • Follow established change/configuration management practices for code deployment.
  • Contribute to solution design discussions and help estimate data engineering efforts.
  • Actively participate in Agile ceremonies, including stand-ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Offer on-call support on a rotational basis for production systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, MIS, or a related discipline (Master’s preferred), or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering or ETL development roles.
  • Deep knowledge of ETL tools like Informatica, DataStage, or DBT.
  • 3–5 years of hands-on SQL development experience.
  • 3–5 years’ experience with scripting using Python or Shell.
  • Experience with relational and dimensional data modeling techniques.
  • 2+ years of cloud experience in platforms like AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Strong understanding of data warehousing concepts and performance tuning.
  • Effective communicator with experience working across both business and technical teams.
  • Exposure to Agile development methodologies and ceremonies.
  • Highly adaptable with a proactive, accountable work style.

Preferred Skills

  • Expertise in developing source-to-target mapping documentation and profiling datasets.
  • Experience supporting data platforms in regulated industries (e.g., insurance, finance, healthcare).
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, version control systems (e.g., Git), and DevOps workflows.
